Toowoomba Hospital 150th Celebrations - June 2009

On 23rd June 2009 a reenactment of the opening of the Toowoomba Hospital in 1859 took place on the original site of the hospital, which is now the Irish Club Hotel, 80 Russell Street. The Darling Downs Gazette of the day reported: "The hospital is now in full working order and there are four patients in the ward."

The Toowoomba Hospital Health & Medicine Museum was open throughout the week.

A number of informative talks and walks took place.

An honorary dinner was held at Rumours, during which distinguished service awards were presented. In addition to the above, an excellent 150 year, decade by decade poster display was produced by hospital staff members Anne Pyke, Stephen Fraser, and Rob Krause. It is now planned to display this permanently in the museum. Space will only allow half of the display, i.e. 75 years, to be presented at one time. The display should be available in early 2010.

Dr Michael Lynch and Aidan Cook are hoping to set up a small historical x-ray display.

Visit of Dr Sachse's descendants.

In 1861, Dr Friedrich Otto Sachse, a german trained doctor, became the second Medical Superintendent of the hospital. In many ways he can be considered the true founder of hospital medicine in Toowoomba. Anglo-Saxon colleagues in Toowoomba at one time doubted his medical qualifications however in 2005 his great grand-daughter - a well known Queensland artist, Judith Laws - graciously gave the museum his original university degrees from Berlin. On the 14th December 2009 she, and six members of her family, (3rd, 4th and 5th generations) visited the museum and were delighted with the display.
