Question: How long has there been a hospital in Toowoomba?

Answer: The first hospital opened on 23rd June1859 on the site now occupied by the Irish Club Hotel at 80 Russell Street..

Question: Who was Emma Webb?

Answer: Emma Webb was the patient who underwent the first appendectomy to be performed in Australia, in 1893. Emma's operation was performed on the kitchen table of the family bakery.

Question: How much did it cost for a hospital bed per year in 1. 1904 and 2. in 2004?

Answer: The cost of a hospital bed in 1904 was 53 pounds sterling and the cost in 2004 was $282,901. In relative values of the day this means the cost per bed was more than 45 times as much.
